Top 10 Financial Companies To Watch For 2014

Investors love stocks that consistently beat the Street without getting ahead of their fundamentals and risking a meltdown. The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does Southern Copper (NYSE: SCCO  ) fit the bill? Let's take a look at what its recent results tell us about its potential for future gains.

What we're looking for
The graphs you're about to see tell SoCo's story, and we'll be grading the quality of that story in several ways:

Growth: Are profits, margins, and free cash flow all increasing? Valuation: Is share price growing in line with earnings per share? Opportunities: Is return on equity increasing while debt to equity declines? Dividends: Are dividends consistently growing in a sustainable way?

What the numbers tell you
Now, let's take a look at SoCo's key statistics:

Advisors' Opinion:

The investment-to-REIT model is alive and well
Before the very end of last year, those involved in the single-family purchase and rental business were largely private equity groupslike the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) , Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) , and Oaktree Capital (NYSE: OAK  ) , which bought up distressed properties by the truckload.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

Is it risky to be putting so much money into an as-yet unproven business model? Some may think so, including investors. Noting the tumble in stock price that newbies like Silver Bay and American Residential have suffered recently, Colony Capital (NYSE: CLNY  ) chief Thomas Barrack postponedthe IPO of his new single-family rental company, Colony American Homes. Similarly, Public Storage (NYSE: PSA  ) has filed for an IPO, too, hoping to take its American Homes 4 Rent unit public -- at some unannounced, future date. In the meantime, American Homes can rely on its $500 million credit facilitywith Wells Fargo, which may be bumped up to $1 billion if necessary.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

TheConsumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR(XLY) has dropped 1.1% to $60.39, while theFinancial Select Sector SPDR(XLF) is off 0.9% at $20.23. Hardest hit is theUtilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU), which has dropped 1.6% to $37.32, while the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) has fallen 1% to $46.49. TheTechnology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) is the top performer: It down 0.5% at $32.39.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

It is also surprising that the Select Sector SPDR Technology (XLK) is one of the worst performers so far in 2013 as it is up just 17% so far this year. So which sectors look the best for the long term and which appear to show the best intermediate-term opportunities?

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    2. Technology
The Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSEMKT: XLK  ) weighs in with $10 billion in assets. It's much less popular among traders, with only 11 million shares trading on an average day. That's likely because the alternative Nasdaq-100 tracking PowerShares QQQ (NASDAQ: QQQ  ) is the favored ETF for tech exposure, as the Nasdaq includes most of the largest tech stocks in the market.

  • [By Joseph Hogue]

At the height of the fiscal cliff scare, there were few places investors could hide. Every single sector saw losses. The Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLK) dropped more than 12.5%, and even the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLV) booked losses of 2.6% over the period.

Advisors' Opinion:

One of the most famous scenes in the cult classic, the Graduate, was when Mr. McGuiretook Dustin Hoffman character aside and said"Ben, I want to say one word to you, just one word: Plastics"; but what about the Berry Plastics Group Inc (NYSE: BERY) and its performance verses that of theiShares S&P 500 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IVV), iShares Russell Midcap Index Fund ETF (NYSEARCA: IWR) and iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IJR)? I should mention that plastics and the Berry Plastics Group was not the place to be yesterday as the stock took a tumble on reduced guidance.

  • [By Chris Ciovacco]

In Thursday's ETF analysis, evidence is presented that supports increasing demand for assets that get a tailwind from a weak U.S. dollar, including emerging markets (EEM) and foreign stocks (EFA). Casting a wider economic net, our market model told us to start buying stocks last week even with the threat of a U.S. default. Wednesday, we continued with our incremental allocation shifts by adding some exposure to the energy sector. Thursday, we sat tight holding long positions in small caps (IJR), Europe (FEZ), emerging markets and technology (QQQ). The upper bounds of the bullish S&P 500 trend channel shown below may offer some resistance to the market's near vertical ascent.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

I still think the emerging markets may be the surprise in 2014 as the technical outlook has improved but a bottom has not yet been confirmed. The more active investor should consider investing in several index-tracking ETFs, but in volatile areas, like the emerging markets, the percentage commitment should be kept low. One should consider not only the large-cap S&P 500 but also the small-cap sectors like iShares S&P 600 Small-Cap (IJR), which I recommended last Wednesday.

Also trading higher today are shares of the Dow's banking components, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and JPMorgan Chase. The companies are up 1.6% and 0.6%, respectively, riding the coattails of Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS  ) and US Bancorp (NYSE: USB  ) , both of which reported their results from the first three months of the year.

  • [By Brian Stoffel]

    2. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , P/E of 42
Bank of America's $13 stock is far from its 2006 highs in the mid-$50s, but shares are up 340% since bottoming out in 2009. Though the company might look expensive with a P/E of 42, analysts expect earnings to grow by 53% per year over the next four years. As with Alcoa, this would actually make the stock seem cheap today if things pan out as expected.

Large money center bank, and personal portfolio holding, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) tacked on 5.2% after it and mortgage insurer MBIA (NYSE: MBI  ) agreed to a $1.7 billion settlement stemming from supposedly misleading loans issued by Bank of America subsidiary Countrywide Financial and insured by MBIA during the financial crisis. Under the terms of the agreement, Bank of America will fork over $1.6 billion in cash to MBIA and about $100 million in MBIA bonds the bank currently owns. This settlement will keep MBIA solvent and removes more uncertainty from Bank of America's long list of potential settlements.

Advisors' Opinion:

    3. U.S. equities record another good year despite enduring a 10% correction – Another 10% correction call, followed by a bull market resumption…. Doll expects that market gains will depend more on earnings growth rather than further multiple expansion. He also would use pullbacks as buying opportunities as most fundamentals continue to improve.

ETF Recommendation: SPDR S&P 500 (NYSEArca: SPY) for broad market, or iShares S&P 500 Growth (NYSEArca: IVW) for a growth focus.

    4. Cyclical stocks outperform defensive stocks – This puts consumer discretionary, energy, financials, industrials, technology and materials all doing better than consumer staples, healthcare, telecom, and utilities. Doll also prefers a free cash flow yield to dividend yield and dividend growth over dividend yield.
