Hot Information Technology Stocks To Watch For 2014

SAN FRANCISCO -- Now that Amazon.com has shown off its flying drones and Google has acquired robots that are faster and stronger than any human, my holiday wish for the technology industry this year is a little more loyalty toward their own customers.

The products made by software and hardware companies have the power to change human lives more than any other industry, save perhaps health care.

That's helped make the tech economy a large and growing part of the overall U.S. economy.

The tech sector enjoyed the widest operating profit margin of any sector within the S&P 500 Index in the third quarter, at roughly 16%.

Information technology consistently earns more operating income than any other U.S. industry, save for financial services, and last year accounted for 23% of corporate profits.

I was so scarred by their subsequent crash that when I heard a portfolio manager rhapsodizing about the recent performance of Plug Power Inc (NSDQ: PLUG), Fuelcell Energy Inc (NSDQ: FCEL) and Capstone Turbine Corp (NSDQ: CPST), I could scarcely believe it. These were names that I had not heard in years, names that many investors would like to forget. Indeed, even with the recent run-up in their share prices, the value of these firms today is just a small fraction of what it was back then.

For those of you that were lucky enough to read, and act on, my bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) penned one week ago (almost to the hour), then congratulations - you're up 270%, give or take. Now get out. Seriously. I have a funny feeling that ZBB along with FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP), and all the other names in the alternative electricity-production group are seeing their last hurrah today. The smart money is already thinking about getting out now, selling into the strength all the late-comers are creating for FCEL, BLDP, and its peers.
