Hot Trucking Stocks To Watch Right Now

Modeling and assigning a fair value to Cummins (NYSE:CMI) is not a particularly easy task. It's hard to find a better company in the transportation components sector, not to mention the wider industrial sector as a whole. Through all of the cyclical ups and downs of the commercial vehicle market(s), Cummins almost always generates double-digit returns on invested capital and has managed to stay in the green with free cash flow.

So quality and ability to execute are not problems. What is the problem is estimating fair future growth rates. It seems hard to imagine that Cummins can match its trailing revenue growth rate of 12%, but countries like Brazil, China, and India are still seeing trucking operators building their fleets, while the move to natural gas could fuel demand not only for LNG/CNG engines, but also compression facilities and more equipment for the energy sector. Although I think the Street may be a little too optimistic on the free cash flow margin leverage Cummins can deliver, I'm increasingly thinking this is a good stock to own for the longer term.

    To spark a bidding contest for World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. (WWE), all Vince McMahon needs to do is wave a "for sale" sign. McMahon, 68, controls the voting power of the $2.3 billion company that's been entertaining spectators with staged fights for decades. The stock is at a record after WWE launched its own subscription streaming network and became the subject of takeover speculation. Should McMahon ever decide he's ready to sell, companies from Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) to Madison Square Garden Co. (MSG) may line up with offers, Albert Fried & Co. and National Alliance Capital Markets said. "What is McMahon's succession plan and who will he pass the keys of the kingdom to?" Robert Routh, an analyst at National Alliance, said in a phone interview. "WWE would be very attractive to many different types of buyers. What they've built can't be recreated. But without McMahon's blessing, it doesn't matter how much somebody is willing to pay for the company."     In order to bolster growth, Coke has made a number of innovative moves. Its Freestyle fountain machine has started to gain in popularity, as restaurant chains including Burger King (NYSE: BKW  ) have signed on to put machines in their stores. Burger King will implement the mix-and-match soda machines in its company-owned locations, likely hoping to benefit from their novelty factor, as many of Burger King's restaurants give customers direct access to fountain drinks. Coca-Cola could also use the machines as an environmentally friendly rebuttal to SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) and its attacks on the drink giant, as Freestyle doesn't require bottling and therefore has the same advantages as SodaStream's home carbonators. SodaStream's campaigns have been fairly effective in highlighting the value of its own product, although it's a stretch to blame Coca-Cola's struggles on the carbonator-maker. Meanwhile, in its efforts to help make its product more available even in areas without electricity, Coca-Cola started an initiative to provide small solar-power kits to kiosk owners in Kenya.

The fast-food chain's new quarterly dividend of $0.06 a share is a 20% improvement. Burger King's board is also authorizing a $200 million buyback.

    An under-$10 biotechnology player that's starting to enter breakout territory is Neuralstem (CUR), which is engaged in the development and commercialization of treatments for central nervous system disease based on transplanting human neural stem cells and the use of small molecule drugs. This stock has been exploding to the upside in 2013, with shares up big by 139%.

    If you take a look at the chart for Neuralstem, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares pushing higher from its low of $2.15 to its intraday high of $2.62 a share. During that uptrend, shares of CUR have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now started to push shares of CUR above a key downtrend line, which is bullish technical price action.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CUR if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.75 to $2.97 a share, and then once it takes out its 52-week high at $3.02 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.10 million shares. If we get that move soon, then CUR will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $4 to $5 a share.

    Traders can look to buy CUR off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $2.28 to $2.15 a share. One can also buy CUR off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    ADDvantage

    ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company�� April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company�� chief technology officer. Clearly, it�� still their company.

    By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today�� AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

    That�� pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

    Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here ��and even though 70% of the company�� shares are not held by the CEO ��we��e still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren�� talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

You��e right that normally a company in their business should see higher revenues, earnings, etc. at the same time. And that time should be when their customers are spending the most on equipment. This heaviest spending will be on new equipment, upgrades, etc.

    But that really isn�� ADDvantage�� business. Let me explain.

    Do you know anything about a company called Copart (CPRT)?

    Great business. If you haven�� read about it, you should look into it. It�� a good name to know in the event stocks fall at some point in the future and offer you a chance to buy at a good P/E.

    Anyway, Copart sells cars. That�� all it does. It has a tiny bit of the business in the UK that involves buying and selling cars. But normally it�� not a principal. It�� just an agent. A broker. It doesn�� ship cars. It doesn�� buy cars. It just stores and sells cars. Copart is a great business. This is especially true because they achieve very high returns on their net tangible investment even though they choose to own rather than leases most of their locations. They own acres and acres and acres of land on which they store cars. You can find the addresses for their locations on their website (each car has a location associated with it that will pop up if you click on the car). Copy and paste that location into Google Earth. You��l be amazed at what you see. Anyway, they carry all this land which they then cover in cars and still they earn good returns on their tangible investment in the business without relying on the use of a lot of leases. So, it�� a very good and very interesting business.

    Now, if I said Copart sold cars, you�� probably think that their revenues and earnings and free cash flow should rise and fall with U.S. car sales.

    If you look at the past 10 years for Copart and for U.S. auto sales you��l see this is not true. Not even a little bit.

    Then there are companies that have increased working capital very, very fast over the last decade or so ��but they��e also increased sales at a startling clip.

    That�� Carbo.

    Let�� look at where the difference between EBITDA and operating cash flow is coming from.

    Cash flow from others as shown on GuruFocus�� 10-year financials page for Carbo ��I��l use this as a proxy for working capital changes ��was positive in only two years. And not by much. Usually, it�� been negative. Over the 10 years, that single line has added up to a negative $173 million. Wow.

    Okay. Then there�� the difference between free cash flow and owner earnings. Owner earnings as you��l remember is Warren Buffett�� calculation of what a business could pay out to owners in cash at the end of the year ��if it stopped growing. But didn�� shrink. More on that later. For now, let�� look at the difference between Carbo�� depreciation and Carbo�� spending on property, plant and equipment.

    Over the last 10 years, cap-ex has been: $546 million (or $425 million if you allow cap-ex to provide cash flow in certain years, this is a weird issue I don�� want to touch right now)

    And over the last 10 years, depreciation has been: $201.52 million

    That�� a big gap. We��e got some combination of Carbo underreporting economic depreciation by anywhere from $225 million to $350 million or so ��or we��e got Carbo investing something like $225 million to $350 million in growth.

    Which is it?

    Let�� check the growth angle first.
