Top 10 Bank Companies For 2014

From a fees perspective, Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS  ) was the No. 2 bank in terms of equity underwriting in 2012. But now, with The Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) taking Sea World public, Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS  ) is the lead book runner on the deal, which includes a whole slew of the biggest names in investment banking. But which name isn't on that list? Why, Morgan Stanley.

Should investors be concerned that this bank's reputation is slipping away? Motley Fool financial analysts Matt Koppenheffer and David Hanson give investors some perspective on how to interpret this fishy new deal.

During the financial crisis, Goldman Sachs did so well pivoting to avoid the worst of the fallout that it had to downplay its success to duck public ire and conspiracy theories. Today, Goldman is still arguably the powerhouse global financial name, and yet its stock trades at a valuation of less than half what it fetched prior to the crisis. Does this make Goldman one of the best opportunities in the market today? To answer that question, I invite you to check out The Motley Fool's special report on the bank. In it, Fool banking expert Matt Koppenheffer uncovers the key issues facing Goldman, including three specific areas Goldman investors must watch. To get access to this report, just click here.

It's easy for U.S. investors to paint Canadian banks with a single brush-stroke, as the differences in the banking system helped keep Bank of Montreal and its peers safer during the financial crisis five years ago. As Canada's housing market has kept rising even after the housing bust south of its border, however, investors have gotten increasingly concerned about the potential health of its banks, especially the largest ones. With downgrades for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (NYSE: CM  ) , Toronto-Dominion (NYSE: TD  ) , and Bank of Montreal among a total of six banks in January, Moody's identified higher debt levels among Canadian consumers as driving potential risk for the economy.

The Company multifamily guaranty book of business consists of multifamily mortgage loans underlying Fannie Mae MBS and multifamily loans and securities held in Fannie Mae mortgage portfolio. Revenues for Fannie Mae Multifamily business are derived from a variety of sources, including guaranty fees received as compensation for assuming the credit risk on the mortgage loans underlying multifamily Fannie Mae MBS and on the multifamily mortgage loans held in its portfolio and on other mortgage-related securities; transaction fees associated with the multifamily business, and other bond credit enhancement related fees. As with the servicing of single-family mortgages, multifamily mortgage servicing is performed by the lenders who! sell the! mortgages to the Company. Although the Company Capital Markets group business activities are focused on short-term financing and investing, revenue from its Capital Markets group is derived primarily from the difference, or spread, between the interests it earns on its mortgage and non-mortgage investments and the interest it incurs on the debt the Company issues to fund these assets. Its Capital Markets revenues are primarily derived from the Company mortgage asset portfolio. If you actually dig through B of A's annual report, you can find a helpful little table that shows the performance of the loan originations that were sold to the GSEs -- primarily Fannie Mae (NASDAQOTCBB: FNMA  ) andFreddie Mac-- between 2004 and 2008. What's even more helpful is that the table breaks out the Countrywide originations versus the "other" originations -- principally, legacy Bank of America production.

The most-hated name on our list today is M&T Bank (MTB), the $16 billion regional banking stock that tips the scales as one of the 20 largest banks in the country (and is one of Warren Buffett's favorite stocks). With a short interest ratio of 27.22, it would take more than five weeks of buying pressure for short sellers to exit their bets at current volume levels. That means that just about any catalyst could trigger a short squeeze right now.

M&T Bank was one of the well-run regional names that actually fared well in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. By actually sticking to retail and commercial banking and maintaining better underwriting standards, MTB ended up with a loan book that was high enough quality to make it through the lean years. Like other banking names, MTB sought to grow its business by acquiring smaller banking names -- and that's one of the big black clouds that investors are fixating on right now. Shares are seeing high short interest thanks to a regulatory edits to improve risk management and a pending acquisition of Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK) that's been a debacle.

All of that negative sentiment has been piling up for the last two years (meanwhile, net margins are consistently above 25% and shares have actually managed to rally more than 62% over that stretch). The sheet amount of event risk surrounding earnings and the Hudson City merger make the prospect of being short here pretty scary. As soon as shorts start covering, expect a chain reaction.

Peter Foley/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesBurberry Group CEO Angela Ahrendts. LONDON -- Christopher Bailey, the designer credited with restoring the cachet to fashion brand Burberry, is to become chief executive next year when long-standing boss Angela Ahrendts will move to Apple. The 157-year-old British fashion house, famous for its camel, red and black check pattern, said Tuesday that Ahrendts would step down by mid-2014 after which Bailey would combine his role as chief creative officer with chief executive. News the 42-year-old Yorkshireman would hold both positions sparked concern among some analysts that he might be taking on too much, and sent shares in the group down 6 percent in early trading, valuing the business at 6.6 billion pounds. "There will undoubtedly be relief that Mr. Bailey, the driving force behind the brand for the last 12 years, is staying," Morgan Stanley (MS) said in a note to clients. "But we anticipate some investor concern about combining the chief creative officer and CEO roles, which are both time consuming and require very different skill sets." Ahrendts, who has been Burberry (BURBY) boss for eight years, during which time its share price has soared about 250 percent, will take up a newly created position at Apple as a senior vice president with oversight of retail and online stores. She will report directly to CEO Tim Cook. Ahrendts will be looking to do better than the last chief executive of a British company who left London to join Apple (AAPL) -- John Browett who quit Dixons to lead the iPad and iPhone maker's global retail expansion in 2012. He left six months later. Bailey joined Burberry in 2001 and has held the major creative role for six years, helping to rebuild the group after it became a victim of its own success in the 1990s when its trademark pattern was embraced by the mass market, losing its appeal to its core wealthy clientele. Under Ahrendts and Bailey, the group has refocused on the luxury market, inc

The broad-based nature of the [manufacturing] gains indicates that the strong second-quarter rebound in economic growth momentum is being sustained.

"The broad-based nature of the [manufacturing] gains indicates that the strong second-quarter rebound in economic growth momentum is being sustained," said Millan Mulraine, deputy chief economist at TD Securities in New York. The Federal Reserve said factory production jumped 1 percent last month after rising 0.3 percent in June. That was the largest gain since February and reflected increases across all major categories. Auto production surged 10.1 percent, the biggest rise since July 2009. There were also sturdy gains in the production of machinery and computers and electronic goods, which economists said hinted at a pick-up in business investment this quarter. A stronger pace of business investment is needed to ensure sustained economic growth. The economy grew at a 4 percent annual pace in the second quarter and current forecasts peg the growth rate for the third quarter within a range of 2.5 percent to 3 percent. Industrial capacity utilization, a measure of how fully firms are using their resources, last month hit its highest level since February 2008. The solid rise in manufacturing and a 0.3 percent advance in mining output helped to offset a 3.4 percent weather-driven decline in utilities production. That left overall industrial production up 0.4 percent in July. The data had little impact on U.S. financial markets, with traders focusing instead on events in Ukraine.
