Top Healthcare Technology Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Elina Furman and her son Julian, 6, with several of the Pley sets.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) When Elina Furman was 7, she came to the United States from Russia with her family and was allowed to bring three toys.

"I appreciated them so much. Each one was a treasure," she said.

That was 1980. Now, parents are overwhelmed with choices, not to mention the cost of buying every flavor of the month. Furman cited a British study that said the average Western kid has 238 toys, but plays with only 12 on a daily basis.

For Furman and her business partner Ranan Lachman, that dilemma sparked an idea. Just as consumers have taken to short-term rentals for everything from autos (Zipcar) to apartments (Airbnb), why not try something similar for toys?

So last May, they launched Pley, which works something like Netflix (NFLX), only with Lego building-block sets. Pley's 15,000 subscribers can choose one or more sets from the company's online "pleylist." Pley ships the toys, and when kids tire of them (usually within two weeks) parents ship them back and get a new set in return. (Pley sanitizes each set before mailing it out.)

This isn really true. A stock that is expected to have constant losses in the future but has earnings today should see no relationship between its current price and its past 12 months of earnings. In reality, there will always be some relationship. Some people buy things like Research in Motion (RIMM) as part of a regular habit of betting that the market gets overly pessimistic when it knocks a company P/E down deep into the single digits. They may be right. There are always some value investors like this who buy things purely because they are statistically cheap.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] east loved of these is of course RIMM. Einhorn already has a paper loss in that stock. His average cost was $18.88 a share. Today price is $15.05. That a 20% loss. And Einhorn only started buying Research In Motion in the last three months of 2011.

But Research In Motion is a pretty small position 0.81% of Einhorn total portfolio compared to one of his other new buys: Dell.

Einhorn already owns $255 million of Dell shares. He paid $15.36 a share. The stock is now at $18.08 a share. That an 18% gain. And Dell will mean a lot more to Einhorn performance than Research In Motion. Dell is a 3.9% position for Einhorn. That almost five times the size of his investment in Research In Motion. So for now at least Einhorn paper gain on Dell will more than make up for his paper loss on RIMM.

    Finally, there Yahoo.

This is a quasi-new buy for Einhorn. He actually bought a 8.5 million shares of Yahoo in the first quarter of 2011 only to sell them for a 2% loss the next quarter. Einhorn was out of Yahoo completely for the third quarter of 2011. And now he back in with about 3 million shares bought in the fourth quarter of 2011. Einhorn average price is a wee bit lower this time. His original purchase price back in first quarter 2011 was $16.64 a share. He got his Yahoo shares about 6% cheaper this time around. Einhorn paid $15.66 a share for his 3 million shares of Yahoo. The stock is down a smidge from there. Around $15.25 a share.

There have been reports of a breakdown in Yahoo buyout talks. But that par for the course in a situation like this where a company is shopping itself around. There will be lots of people leaking stories for lots of different reasons. Don believe everything you read about Yahoo. And certainly don try to trade on everything you read about Yahoo.

    Why is Einhorn buying Yahoo?

Probably on a sum of the parts basis. As everybod

Klarman said the following to investors in his Baupost letter earlier this year: ur disciplined risk aversion throughout 2011 enabled us to avoid dangerous temptations and remain focused on investments in our areas of strength and competitive advantage.Competitive advantage comes down to two questions. Can the company raise prices for their products while maintaining sales in a competitive environment? Can it continue to retain customers as the business undergoes operational and technological changes? One aspect for investors to keep in mind is that of technological change, a constant threat to industries like retail stores and mobile communications. Best Buy (BBY) used to be the go-to place where customers could shop for electronic appliances but internet retail took that away. RIM (RIMM) used to be a model company that produced phones for email on-the-go but competitors like Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) upped the ante and took away the value of RIM products. These kinds of circumstances show that keeping up with trends on a regular basis is a vital part of bottom-up investing.

It pays to distinguish between stocks and productive assets. Some companies, such as Research In Motion (RIMM), generate diminishing returns. They belong to productive assets but certainly not good ones. As a result, their stock prices --- the value of the asset --- kept falling.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Divine]

Demand, or lack thereof, also contributed to International Paper's (NYSE: IP  ) 3.5% decline Thursday. While on the bright side, the company reported growth in revenue and earnings in the first quarter, those single-digit advances failed to impress shareholders. A strong housing market brought in more revenues for International Paper's moving boxes, but a weak packaged food industry entirely mitigated the resultant gains.

First, call centers are moving en masse from traditional PBX-based systems to cutting edge Internet-based (IP) systems.

Second, communications systems are shifting to the cloud, with market growth of 18% for hosted systems, versus 2% for on-premise systems.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As its name implies, International Paper (IP) is one of the largest paper and packaging manufacturers in the world, supplying corrugated packaging and free-sheet paper to North America and the emerging market. Still, North America represents that vast majority of IP's business -- the firm earns 75 cents out of every dollar here at home, positioning that leaves some big growth opportunities open overseas. Manufacturing operations in a basket of the most attractive developing economies gives it a key foot in the door to accomplish that growth.

I'll admit that paper isn't exactly the most exciting business. But it can be lucrative – after 2008, staid paper makers sported insanely cheap valuations that ultimately led to some of the S&P 500's rebound gains. And while IP isn't as bargain-priced as it was then, the stock is far from expensive. International Paper spent recent years becoming a less integrated paper firm, unloading around $10 billion worth of timberland assets and buying other firms' paper and packaging units instead. That change has spread out IP's capital needs and put operations more in-line with the ebb and flow with the economy.

A balance sheet with very high replacement value and a substantial share of the North American market help pave the way for a dividend hike at IP in the next quarter. Right now, the firm pays a 30-cent quarterly yield that adds up to a 2.5% yield.

  • [By Ray Merola]

In 2006, International Paper Co. (IP) CEO John Faraci embarked upon a vision to transform the company. He sought a larger, leaner and more competitive enterprise operating in one of the most commoditized of industries: paper and containerboard products.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

That in turn could create a problem for hospital companies. Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC  ) , Community Health Systems (NYSE: CYH  ) , and Health Management Associates (NYSE: HMA  ) have all seen their share prices jump sharply as investors grow increasingly excited about the prospects of uninsured Americans getting mandated coverage under Obamacare. The hope is that by having more people insured, these hospital companies will lose less in uncovered health care expenses they incur when they treat uninsured patients.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Tenet Healthcare (THC) has dropped 2.3% to $47.23 after the hospital operator missed earnings forecasts and offered lower-than-expected guidance.

    The 10-second takeaway

  • [By Sean Williams]

In addition, the nation's largest hospital operators, HCA Holdings (NYSE: HCA  ) and Tenet Healthcare (NYSE: THC  ) are counting on Obamacare to reduce the number of uninsured patients that it treats. Each year, these hospitals lose millions of dollars to doubtful accounts of patients that have received care but are unable to pay their bill. For HCA, that figure amounted to nearly $3.8 billion, or 10% of its total revenue, in 2012. Tenet's doubtful account provision was slightly lower at $785 million, or 8% of its total 2012 revenue.

Yet, Europe's leading potash player K+S (NASDAQOTH: KPLUY  ) just said that, because of the upheaval that's occurred in the market, it was slashing its dividend by 82% for 2013,reducing the payout ratio to just 11% of adjusted after taxearnings, a far cry from the miner's usualratio of between 40% and 50%. Harry Domash: Well, one that's really good for us has been Reaves Utility Income. It holds primarily US utility and telecom stocks and it's been a pretty good dividend raiser. The ticker is (UTG), paying about a 6.1% yield now and it's a good serial dividend increaser so it's a very good one.

If you're worried about rising interest rates then Invesco Dynamic Credit Opportunities, ticker (VTA), invests in below investment-grade floating rate bank loans. In other words, these are called senior loans.

They're bank loans that adjust their payouts based on prevailing interest rates, so if interest rates go up, these loans will pay higher dividends, so this is a good hedge if you are concerned about rising interest rates.

Another one that's really performed, and it's paying a 6.9% yield right now, Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities, ticker (GOF), that's actually Claymore Guggenheim, holds corporate and government backed, that it's mostly investment-grade and it's paying a 10.1% yield right now, which is pretty high. Those are three that I could recommend right now.

Steven Halpern: Well, we really appreciate you joining us today and sharing your expertise. Thank you.

    Harry Domash: You're welcome.

Earnings season was very good to TripAdvisor (NASDAQ: TRIP  ) , which rose 16.3% today on better-than-expected advertising revenue. The online travel specialist has now gained 60% in 2013, and with double-digit growth in quarterly sales (up 25% year-over-year), and earnings (up 27% on an adjusted basis and 24% under GAAP rules), it's easy to see why. Full-year revenue growth is still expected to come in somewhere in the "low 20s" range, as in 20%. TripAdvisor has been trying to transition into a more search-centric business model, so posting big beats on its earnings in spite of these transitional efforts points toward the potential for bigger gains further on.

It’s April Fools’ Day, but the joke is on the bears as stocks gained today, led by Intuitive Surgical (ISRG). TripAdvisor (TRIP), Cisco Systems (CSCO), Boeing (BA) and Walt Disney (DIS).
